Lisbon: Why not start your sightseeing with what is arguably Lisbon’s most iconic landmark, the Belém Tower. Completed in 1515 to provide a strategic defensive point on the River Tagus, controlling the entrance to Lisbon’s harbour and indeed the city itself. Resembling a chess piece, the tower is perhaps one of the best examples of Manueline architectural style and a climb to the turrets provides a wonderful vantage point over the river and the city sprawling out beneath.
Lisbon: Lisbon’s oldest and most historic district, Alfama perches high above the city and is a picturesque mix of steep, narrow, cobbled streets and historic buildings, influenced indelibly by the area’s Moorish origins. Home to a number of Lisbon’s main landmarks including the Cathedral, Castelo de São Jorge and Church of Santa Engracia, the Alfama is also renowned for its many Fado shows. Hop on and off the yellow Tram 28 to enjoy Alfama at its atmospheric best.
Lisbon: One of the oldest buildings in the city, Lisbon’s Sé Cathedral was built in 1150 on the site of a former mosque soon after the city was retaken from the Moors, yet was badly damaged during the earthquake of 1755. A recognisable Lisbon landmark thanks to its two distinctive Romanesque towers, there’s some interesting interior items of note including a tranquil Gothic cloister and the treasury, containing statues, relics, silverware and manuscripts.
Make your own way to the railway station for the included journey by rail to Porto where you will spend 3 nights. The journey time is approximately 2hrs 45mins.
Porto: There is much to see in this historical city but a good starting point would be Porto's historical centre, the Ribeira district. The area is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and oozes atmosphere with its narrow alleyways, colourful houses and lively restaurants, bars and cafes. This part of town also offers a fabulous vantage point from which to see the Port Wine houses located across the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Porto: During your stay in the city, you will no doubt have occasion to see the famous Ponte de Dom Luis I bridge. Regarded by many as the emblem of the city, the Ponte de Dom Luis I was designed by the engineer, Teófilo Seyrig, a student of Gustave Eiffel. Completed in 1886 and measuring just shy of 400 metres long, the bridge’s distinctive arch is still considered one of the world’s largest to be constructed of forged iron. Today it serves both pedestrians and the metro service, connecting Vila Nova de Gaia and the Garden of Morro with central Porto and its cathedral in particular.
