Departing from Manchester
At a glance itinerary:
Day 1: Fly direct to Lisbon. On arrival join the transfer to
your hotel where you will spend 4 nights.
Day 2: Lisbon: The city has a compact centre which contains
many of the important sights, including Sao Jorge castle and the Royal Palace.
A little further out is the suburb of Belém with its famous Tower overlooking
the River Tagus and the wonderful Jeronimos Monastery. Above all, it’s worth taking time to explore
the different districts which make up the city centre including Baixa with its
elegant squares, broad avenues and rectangular layout.
Day 3: Lisbon: There are a wealth of excellent museums to explore,
including the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Military Museum which
contains Vasco da Gama’s sword and the Maritime Museum in Belém, which tells
the story of Portugal’s pioneering role in world exploration by sea.
Day 4: Lisbon: It’s difficult to visit Lisbon without trying
a Pastel de Nata, a type of creamy custard tart. The best place to eat the tarts is the Antiga
Confeitaria de Belém, a tile-decorated bakery where the recipe originated and
where they are known as Pasteis de Belém. Here the delicious tarts can be eaten
warm, straight from the oven.
Day 5: Join the transfer to the airport for the flight from
Lisbon to Ponta Delgada where you will spend 4 nights.
Day 6: Ponta Delgada: São Miguel is the largest of the nine
islands that make up the Azores archipelago, with Ponta Delgada making up the
tourist heart of the island.
Day 7: Ponta Delgada:
White-washed houses and buildings, 17th and 18th Century convents and
churches are dotted around the rolling hills of Ponta Delgada. Staying closer to the centre you will find
cobbled streets and small squares and a large boulevard, which is perfect for
evening seaside walks.
Day 8: Ponta Delgada
Day 9: Join the transfer to the airport for the flight from
Ponta Delgada to Funchal where you will spend 4 nights.
Day 10: Funchal: Situated in central Funchal and today more
commonly known as Blandy’s Wine Lodge, this historic Madeira wine producer
takes its original name from the convent that once stood on this site. A tour
here offers an insight into the history of the wine and its development and
evolution over its 200-year history, as well as an opportunity to taste various
styles and vintages of Madeira.
Day 11: Funchal: The Jardim Botânico is set amidst the
grounds of the former Quinta do Bom Sucesso plantation just a few kilometres
outside Funchal, the city’s Botanical Gardens cover 35,000 square metres of
terraced hillside and are awash with riotous floral colours and scents.
Day 12: Funchal: Be sure to visit the Sé Cathedral. Dating
from the late 15th and early 16th centuries when it was commissioned by King
Manuel I of Portugal, the beautiful Manueline Sé Cathedral represents Funchal’s
most visited landmark and boasts intricate geometric designs across its
distinctive wooden ceiling and an Arabic influence throughout. Inside the
cathedral, you’ll find a silver processional cross, donated by the Portuguese
king whilst outside is a statue of Pope John Paul II.
Day 13: Join the transfer to Funchal airport for the return
flight to the UK.
