Your itinerary

Day 1

Fly direct to Munich. On arrival join the private transfer to your hotel where you will spend one night.

Day 2

Make your own way to the railway station for the included journey by rail across Bavaria and through Austria to Slovenia. (Train departs Munich 1217 arriving in Lesce Bled at 1750.) On arrival in Lesce Bled join the private transfer from the railway station to your hotel where you will spend 4 nights.

Day 3

Lake Bled: Free time to explore the town of Bled and its beautiful surroundings. The Slovenian resort town of Bled nestles in the foothills of the Julian Alps along the emerald green waters of Lake Bled. A trip up to the 11th century Bled Castle will reward you with the finest view of Bled island, the town of Bled and of the wider countryside of the Gorenjska region. A boat trip across the shimmering water to the Bled Island, where once a temple to the ancient Slavic goddess of love Živa used to stand, is a lovely way to spend the day. After the local population was converted from paganism to Christianity in 745, goddess Živa was replaced with the Christian Virgin Mary. In 1465, a single-nave Gothic church was built on the island. The addition of a monumental staircase with 99 stone steps in the 17th century brought with it a local wedding tradition. In order to get married the groom should carry his bride up all of the 99 steps!

Day 4

Lake Bled: The 6km long trail around Lake Bled is just long enough for a relaxing walk or bike ride. The trail also leads to higher points, noted for their splendid views.

Day 5

Bled: The town of Bled itself is quaint and picturesque. A stroll along the grassy lakeside promenade is a lovely way to spend the morning. Take a break at one of the many cafés to sample the Kremsnita. Bite through a golden crispy crust made from butter dough to a delicious vanilla cream topped with whipped cream and a further crispy layer of butter dough and icing sugar.

Day 6

Join the private transfer from your hotel to the railway station in Lesce Bled for the included journey by rail to the Slovenian capital, Ljubjlana. The journey time is approximately 1 hour and there are regular trains running throughout the day. On arrival in Ljubljana make your own way to your hotel where you will spend 3 nights.

Day 7

Ljubljana: Two earthquakes have shaped the architectural beauty of the city. The first in 1511 destroyed most of the medieval city. The rebuilding of the city was under the instruction of only the finest Italian architects, many of whose ornate staircases, facades, churches, palaces and public buildings are still there for you to see today.  A second earthquake in 1895 resulted in the city's native son, Joze Plecnik, restyling large parts of the city in Neo-Classicist and Secessionist styles.

Day 8

Ljubljana: Be sure to visit Ljubljana Castle. The castle's Outlook Tower and ramparts offer some of the most beautiful views of the city, while the castle houses a museum exhibition on Slovenian history, a puppet museum, and a number of historical rooms such as the Chapel of St George, the Prison, and a video presentation room called Virtual Castle. Ljubljana Castle, which can quickly be reached by funicular railway.

Day 9

Make your own way to the railway station for the included journey by rail to Zagreb. (The train departs at either 0845 or 1445 and the journey time is approximately 2hrs 30mins.) On arrival in Zagreb make your own way to your hotel where you will spend 3 nights.

Day 10

Zagreb: The Croatian capital is a glorious Austro-Hungarian city awash with churches, museums and art galleries. The city is divided into upper and lower areas, which in days gone by constituted two separate towns. Now united as one city, each part still retains peculiar characteristics. Standing in the middle of the two halves is the impressive main square, Trg Bana Jelacica. Gorni Grad, the upper town is the oldest part of the city and working your way through the winding cobbled streets is a joy. Climb the Lotrscak Tower, built in the 13th century to protect the city gates and reward yourself with spectacular views over the city.

Day 11

Zagreb: The lower town, Donji Grad, is known for its elegant squares, gardens, wide boulevards and parks. A funicular railway links both parts of the city.  It is in the lower town that most of the city's numerous museums are located. Explore the museums and discover the history, art and culture of both Zagreb and Croatia and the rest of the world to boot.

Day 12

Make your own way to the railway station for the included journey by rail to Split. Be prepared for an early start, the train departs at 0735 arriving in Split at 1337. On arrival make your own way to your hotel where you will spend 3 nights.

Day 13

Split: Croatia's second largest city sits under a dramatic mountain backdrop on a beautiful stretch of Adriatic coastline. With a history dating back to Roman times, Split offers an abundance of Roman ruins and Gothic and Baroque architecture.  The city is also, of course, an exuberant seaside town which perfectly blends the old with the new. Step inside Diocletian's magnificent palace dating back to 295 AD and be greeted by a mass of shops, restaurants, and bars.

Day 14

Split: If you are feeling adventurous, take the local bus for a day trip to Trogir. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the town is situated on a small island (although connected to the mainland by a very short bridge) and its wonderful sights (including the must-see cathedral, possibly one of the best in Croatia) can be easily covered in a day.

Day 15

Join the private transfer from your hotel to the airport for the return flight to the UK.
