Lisbon: The city has a compact centre which contains many of the important sights, including Sao Jorge castle and the Royal Palace. A little further out is the suburb of Belém with its famous Tower overlooking the River Tagus and the wonderful Jeronimos Monastery. Above all, it’s worth taking time to explore the different districts which make up the city centre including Baixa with its elegant squares, broad avenues and rectangular layout.
Lisbon: There are a wealth of excellent museums to explore, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Military Museum which contains Vasco da Gama’s sword and the Maritime Museum in Belém, which tells the story of Portugal’s pioneering role in world exploration by sea.
Lisbon: It’s difficult to visit Lisbon without trying a Pastel de Nata, a type of creamy custard tart. The best place to eat the tarts is the Antiga Confeitaria de Belém, a tile-decorated bakery where the recipe originated and where they are known as Pasteis de Belém. Here the delicious tarts can be eaten warm, straight from the oven.

Funchal: Situated in central Funchal and today more commonly known as Blandy’s Wine Lodge, this historic Madeira wine producer takes its original name from the convent that once stood on this site. A tour here offers an insight into the history of the wine and its development and evolution over its 200-year history, as well as an opportunity to taste various styles and vintages of Madeira.
Funchal: The Jardim Botânico is set amidst the grounds of the former Quinta do Bom Sucesso plantation just a few kilometres outside Funchal, the city’s Botanical Gardens cover 35,000 square metres of terraced hillside and are awash with riotous floral colours and scents.
Funchal: Be sure to visit the Sé Cathedral. Dating from the late 15th and early 16th centuries when it was commissioned by King Manuel I of Portugal, the beautiful Manueline Sé Cathedral represents Funchal’s most visited landmark and boasts intricate geometric designs across its distinctive wooden ceiling and an Arabic influence throughout. Inside the cathedral, you’ll find a silver processional cross, donated by the Portuguese king whilst outside is a statue of Pope John Paul II.

Our opinion…This hotel offers good facilities at a very affordable price. It is very popular due to its great location, walking distance to Marques de Pombal square and other main attractions.
Location... Set in a historical building facing the delightful park Eduardo VII, this city hotel is conveniently located just off Marquês de Pombal Square and close to Avenida da Liberdade with its elegant shops and boutiques
Accommodation… All the rooms are decorated in a classical style. Facilities include insulated windows, a working space and free Wi-Fi and are equipped with LCD TV, telephone, mini-bar, safe-box and hair dryer in the bath-room.
Facilities... The hotel bar offers a wide variety of sandwiches, soft drinks, wines and local beers.
Our opinion… Good location just five minutes from Funchal sea front.
Location… The Orquidea Hotel is perfectly positioned for tourists, as it's close to all the major sights of the Old Town, such as the Town Square, Madeira Story Centre and the Botanical Gardens. The Monte Palace Gardens and the Funchal Sacred Art Museum are also nearby, as are the city's shops, restaurants, bars and cafes.
