| Amsterdam
has always been at the forefront of city break holidays.
A city of bustling streets and picturesque canals, crooked
gabled houses, ‘coffee bars’ and bicycle traffic
jams, this place assaults the senses in a host of different
ways but has always had a distinctly youthful and vibrant
flavour so it is no surprise that
there are plenty of cheap hotels in Amsterdam to cater for
the budget end of the market. Don’t assume, however,
that you can just turn up in Amsterdam at any time and walk
into a cheap hotel. It is such a popular destination that
many periods of the year do sell out so if you want to be
sure of a good choice of cheap hotels in Amsterdam make
sure that you plan ahead and book early for the best deals.

So how easy is it to book cheap
hotels in Amsterdam? Here at Cities Direct our expertise
in putting together cheap city breaks has been built on
experience gained in the premier destinations like Amsterdam.
The golden rule is to plan ahead, especially at popular
times of year such as during the bulbfields season and of
course school holidays. But the best bargains are undoubtedly
to be had out of season, especially in the winter months
of January and February when the city is quieter but can
be equally attractive with frosted canals and no queues.
Really cheap hotels in Amsterdam tend to be those located
some way outside the centre. These hotels are usually decent
3 star ‘business’ style hotels with excellent
access to Amsterdam centre by tram or train and are cheapest
at weekends. Good examples include the Tulip Inn City West
and the hotels operated by the Bastion group which are functional,
clean and reliable.

There are also good cheap hotels in Amsterdam’s
Schiphol Airport quarter from where there’s a non
stop train service to central station. The 3 star Ibis Amsterdam
Airport hotel is a good bet for cheap accommodation. Its
just 7 minutes from the airport by free shuttle bus and
in around 20 minutes you’re in the heart of Amsterdam
so its ideal for those on late arriving or early departing
low cost flights. At Cities Direct we have also negotiated
fantastic deals at some of the excellent 4 star hotels in
this area, including the Dorint, the Novotel and the Mercure
– so you can see that cheap hotels in Amsterdam don’t
necessarily have to be small, poky and grubby!!!

Another area where Cities Direct can
offer a range of cheap hotels in Amsterdam is the group
of properties clustered around the Vondelpark and the Museum
quarter. This is a pleasant part of the city which, as its
name suggests, is ideal for visiting museums like the Van
Gogh, Modern Art and Rijksmuseums. Dam Square is walkable
in 20-30 minutes and all the very centre is only a short
hop by tram. One of the really cheap hotels in this part
of Amsterdam is the very simple King which has 2 star rating
but where sharing facilities keeps the price right down.
Nearby are other 2 stars such as the Trianon and PC hotels
close to the lively Leidseplein and the Wilhelmina, a small
family run hotel near the Vondelpark with clean well maintained
rooms. Another good choice in this area is the Best Western
Museum hotel – a 3 star property proving that not
all the cheap hotels in Amsterdam’s more central zones
are 2 star!

Cheap hotels in Amsterdam’s very
centre around Dam Square and the central canals are in short
supply but years of Cities Direct experience does enable
us to offer some excellent deals right in the heart of the
city. The 3 star Hotel Terminus is a good example located
just across from the central station where airport shuttles
arrive and only 5 minutes stroll from Damrak, the canal
boats and all the bars and shops you could wish for. Standard
rooms here offer the best deal. The Avenue is not the cheapest
hotel in Amsterdam but considering its perfect central location
and upper 3 star rating it does offer superb value, and
the Citadel and Rembrandt Residence also offer great value
in very central locations. This has always been a city of
surprises and few people would expect to be able to book
cheap hotels in Amsterdam with a five star rating, but there
are certain times of the year when Cities Direct can arrange
5 star hotels in central Amsterdam at some amazingly low
prices.
