At Christmas time Copenhagen takes on an almost magical quality, which will certainly put you in the Christmas mood! There are two Christmas Markets offering Danish Christmas specialities, decorations, gifts, candles, arts and crafts.

Berlin has many Christmas markets both small and large, each with its very own atmosphere. The Gendarmenmarkt is one of the most beautiful squares in Berlin, and makes a great setting for one of the many Christmas markets.

Hosting one of Germany's oldest and largest Christmas Markets, Frankfurt is an excellent choice for a traditional Christmas atmosphere. The lavishly decorated stalls are full of wonderful gifts, mulled wine and mouth-watering delights.

Cologne has a long history of organising superb, traditional Christmas markets, filled with seasonal cheer, delicious local specialities and not forgetting, the wonderful mulled wine. This welcoming city hosts no fewer than six Christmas Markets inlcuding an interesting medieval Christmas Bazaar in front of the chocolate Museum.

There might not be Christmas Markets on this city break but as a as a VAT free jurisdiction, a pre-christmas shopping break to Gibraltar is enhanced by its value added shopping experience!

Dusseldorf has two main market areas - the Christmas market at Schadowplatz and the Nikolaus market in the Altstadt. Wooden stalls offer an array of craft items, ornaments and gifts, delicious cinammon cakes and mulled red wine. There is also a huge ice skating rink on the Corneliusplatz.

According to legend, the first decorated Christmas tree originated in Riga in 1510 and today the city throws itself into the Christmas spirit. The Christmas Market located in Dome Square has cheerful wooden booths with hot wine, gingerbread figures, hand-made arts and handicrafts, entertainers and singers.

This wonderful destination really comes to life over the festive period with its daily Christmas Markets consisting of rows of brightly decorated wooden huts selling Czech handicrafts, local hand-made jewellery and tasty local specialities such as svarene (hot wine) and many other delights.

Soak up the sights and sounds of Budapest's market on Vaci Utca and Vorosmarty Square, one of Budapest's finest settings. Only the top Hungarian craftspeople are invited to Budapest's Christmas fair, so the intricate porcelain, cut glass and leather goods are of the highest quality.

Dortmund's Christmas market, one of the biggest in Germany, has over 300 stalls. Its hallmark is a gigantic Christmas tree which consistsof 1,700 individual fir trees, stands 45 metres tall and is adorned with 13,0000 lights - the biggest in the world.

During Advent, Hamburg's town Hall will once again provide the grand setting for the city's most charming Christmas Market. One hundred merchants will set up their shops on Hamburg's largest urban square.

During this time you can find “Christkindlmärkte” on nearly every corner of the city. Christmas presents, food and most importantly “Glühwein” are on offer. The biggest markets are at the Vienna City Hall, at the Spittelberg and inside the University Campus.
