What to see...
The town has two centres: "Città Alta"
(upper city), a hilltop medieval town, and the "Città Bassa" (lower
city), connected by funicular/cable car, roads, and foot-paths. The upper
city, surrounded by Venetian walls built in the 17th century, forms the
historic centre of Bergamo. This has numerous places of interest including
Cittadella, built by the Visconti in the mid 14th Century. The Piazza
Vecchia in the heart of the old town, has to be one of the finest small
squares in Italy, surrounded by a mixture of medieval and Renaissance
architecture. Visit the ornate Colleoni Chapel and despite a relatively bland
looking exterior, the Santa Maria Maggiore church has an amazing interior with
a rich baroque decor. Built in the 12th century, the church has seen many
alterations over the centuries, including red marble lions on the north side,
and white marble lions on the south porch. Traces do still remain of the
original medieval frescoes, including parts of a “tree of life” celebrating the
life of Christ. Local boy Donizetti, composer of some 75 operas, is buried
here, and his nearby house is now a museum. The lower city "Città Bassa" is the
modern centre of Bergamo. At the end of the 19th century Città Bassa was
composed of Borghi, the residential houses built along the main road that
linked Bergamo with the other cities of Lombardy but Bassa rapidly expanded
during the 20th century.
