Cities Direct

barcelona City Breaks

Barcelona, the second largest city in Spain and capital of Catalunya offers an ideal blend of culture, nightlife, shopping & some of the most unusual architecture in Europe. The city also enjoys a wonderful coastal location with excellent beaches, adding an extra dimension to a City Break.

Don’t Miss

Wandering along the Ramblas, the vibrant boulevards at the heart of the city centre, exploring the fascinating shops and world famous Boqueria market.  You’re sure to be fascinated by the unusual and exciting style of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi, examples of which are found all over the city. His trademarks are unusual shapes and multi coloured tiling said to reflect nature’s curves and angles.  Perhaps the most famous of all his works in Barcelona is the cathedral of Sagrada Familia which has been under construction since 1882 and is not expected to be completed for some time yet!  Art lovers must take in the excellent Picasso Museum whilst the superb view across the city from Montjuic Park is well worth the ride on the cable car.  Sport fans must tour Camp Nou, FC Barcelona’s home ground and the city’s nightlife is legendary.

Museums abound - the Picasso Museum Gaudi’s La Pedrera is one of the most interesting whilst his own unusual house and museum in Parc Guell, one of the many delightful parks in Barcelona, is a real gem.  The Museu d’Historia de Catalunya depicts the region’s often painful history and offers a fascinating perspective of the city’s development.

Eat & Drink

Take a break from sightseeing with a refreshing drink in a pavement café along with the locals to watch the world wandering past After a busy day, what better way to unwind than to sit down and enjoy some traditional Catalan cuisine, which combines the best of French and Spanish cooking. Try pintxos, plates of bite-size goodies which are the Catalan version of tapas.

Some of Spain’s finest shopping is to be found along the city’s main avenues but if it’s the more esoteric you’re after take a wander through the historic Gothic Quarter with its small boutiques & antique shops.  Or why not head for El Poble Espanyol (Spanish Village), a unique combination of architectural styles from across Spain, with its host of contemporary art & traditional craft shops, situated in a pleasant traffic-free setting in Montjuïc park.

The cathedral of La Seu with its magnificent nave and wonderful cloisters - a haven of peace oft overlooked along with the nearby Roman remains. Stretching north along the waterfront from the pleasant Port Vell area, Barcelona’s fine beaches and seafront restaurants and bars are another highlight undiscovered by many visitors

The monastery of Montserrat, perched in its dramatic hilltop setting, is worth an excursion whatever your beliefs and there’s excellent outlet shopping at La Roca served by shuttle bus

A Mediterranean climate with mild, humid winters and warm dry summers
